Our Y7 rugby team finished their season with a nail-biting win over closest rivals Byrchall in what resembled more of a tennis match than a rugby match!
The team found themselves 4-0 down after just 40 seconds - not an ideal start! A few minutes later, Leighton Hock dummied his way over from close range, Will Doyle converting to give us a 6-4 lead. We then conceded straight from the kick off to fall behind 10-6. "Captain fantastic" Joel Sumner then forced his way over from 35m out, leading by example. Again, converted by Will Doyle to give us a 12-10 lead. On the stroke of half time, that lead was lost and we went into the break 16-12 down.
Man of the match Jack Rogan scored a long-range try quite early on in the second half. Will Doyle added the extras for an 18-16 lead. Yet again, this lead was short-lived as well fell 22-18 behind.
Final set of the game, last tackle, the lads decided to risk a powerplay, with some silky handling and a fantastic cut-out pass from Daniel Alvarado, Oscar Frederiksen dove over in the corner to tie the scores up at 22-22. Up steps Will Doyle, showing amazing level-headedness under pressure, slots over the conversion from out wide, giving us a 24-22 lead - and the final whistle was blown!
The celebrations started on the field and continued into the dressing rooms. It was a fantastic game with an even better result!
What a pleasure it has been to be involved with every single player this year. They are a terrific set of young men with absolutely great potential for the future!
