Our Y11 football team have been crowned Year 11 Wigan & Leigh Schools' Champions after a exciting clash with St Mary’s that ended 2-2 in normal time, before the Eddies' dream team held their nerve to win 4 - 1 on penalties!
It was, in every sense, a game of 2 halves. St Mary’s dominated the opening period, dictating play and creating chances, whilst Eddies struggled to find their rhythm. A defensive lapse saw St Mary’s take the lead, and they looked in control heading into the break. The second half told a different story. A tactical masterstroke from Mr Bradley during the interval, combined with the inspired introduction of Callum McDonald up front, completely changed the game. Eddies pressed higher, moved the ball with purpose, and put them back into contention. Their persistence paid off with an equaliser which was the prelude for a frantic finale!
The match had everything: missed chances, goalkeeper errors, a potential red card for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity, and, most dramatically, a last-gasp equaliser that sent the tie to penalties. In the shootout, Eddies were clinical, converting four spot-kicks to St Mary’s one, sparking jubilant celebrations.
This victory marks Eddies’ third league title in five years, underlining their reputation as one of the region’s most successful school sides. Their second-half performance will go down as one of their finest, turning adversity into glory.
#CONGRATULATIONS to the TEAM and a massive pat on the back for their coaches, Mr Hind and Mr Bradley.
