Summer started learning the sport of Judo about 3 years ago – her mum was a former Northwest Champion and encouraged Summer to take up the sport.

Where do you train?

At the SKK Judo Club in Newton-le-Willows.

What do you wear for Judo?

You wear the ‘Judogi’ which is the traditional uniform which is a heavy jacket, pants and a cotton belt.  When you start learning, you wear a white belt and then you can earn different coloured belts by winning competitions. The belts are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black.

What belt do you hold at the moment?

I am an orange belt but hope to gain a green belt in a couple of weeks.

What do you like/love most about Judo?

I love the competitive aspect of judo, the skill involved and I enjoy the training.

When was your first competition?

I first competed at the beginning of 2019 at Bacup Judo Club with someone on the same level as me and I won Gold!

For your win at the Regional British Schools Championships, how many were you up against?

I beat 3 girls, who were all older than me!

What was your most recent win?

This was called the SKK championships which was an inter-club competition - over 200 contestants took part, across 2 days. They travelled from all over the country to enter.  I won a gold medal!

What is your long-term ambition with Judo?

I would really love to go to the Olympic Games and show that females can be successful in the sport and be a black belt!
