What will I study at KS4?

You will follow the EDEXCEL History 9-1 syllabus in Year 10 and Year 11.

This is split into 4 units which are assessed at the end of Year 11 with 3 exam papers.

You will study:

  • Weimar and Nazi Germany – this unit focuses on the impact of the First World War and Germany, the growth of the Nazi Party and life in Nazi Germany.
  • Anglo Saxon and Norman England – a study on the transformation of Saxon England by the Norman conquest during the reign of William I.
  • Warfare between 1250 and 2015 – a thematic study which compares human conflict across 4 time periods.
  • The Cold War – a study of the political rivalry between the USA and USSR after the Second World War which took the world to the brink of nuclear war.

Each of these units involves a significant amount of factual content and, in addition to learning the key details of each period, you will learn how to compare and describe events, explain the causes and consequences of events, explain how far things have changed over a period of time, evaluate the utility of a source, explain why some sources have different interpretations of the same event and develop your ability to construct and support an opinion.

Lessons involve a variety of tasks designed to allow you to understand the events in each unit including note taking, summarising, source analysis, group tasks, presentations and debates.

There is also a focus on exam technique and you will receive example answers, mark schemes and practice questions for every style of question on your 3 exam papers making you as well prepared as possible to tackle the exams.

You will have the use of a textbook in lessons for each unit as well as a selection of revision guides to use in preparation for your GCSE exams.
