BBC Young Reporter

Do you want to get into the world of reporting and journalism?  Maybe as a news reporter in front of the camera or as a camera man or offering technical support.  Or maybe as a copywriter writing the scripts or summing up the news.  If it sounds like something you want to get involved in, then BBC School Report would be right up your street.  Ask your English teacher for details.

Stan Lee Initiative (Comic Books)

Calling fans of comic books!  Make sure you visit the school library and check out the comic books available to borrow.  If Mrs Taylor spots that you are an comic book reader, you might be selected to participate in the Stan Lee Initiative which involves a team of comic book experts in the selection of the best new comic book published each year.  The winning book receives The Excelsior Award and you could be on the review panel.  See Mrs Bowen-Read in the Library for details.

Year 7 Performance Poetry

In the summer term, you can look forward to our in-class competition which will see you competing against your classmates to give your best performance in our Performance Poetry competition.  Great fun is had while learning your favourite poems off by heart and then bringing them to life with your best voices and dramatic techniques.  Each class will then cheer on their winners as they compete against their rival classes to be crowned the overall champions.  Special guests will make up the judging panel for the finals of this exciting and fun end to Year 7.

Year 8 Chocolate Project

A firm favourite on the Year 8 calendar, for teachers and pupils alike, is the Year 8 Chocolate Project competition.  During this project you will design, create and present your very own chocolate product which will be presented to your fellow classmates.  You will learn all about the creating and branding of your own product as well as how to present in a convincing and confident way and, of course, you will have to do some very important research in tasting different chocolates in your lessons  (so that you can get your product just right, of course!)  There is even talk of getting some industry professionals to run workshops for pupils to enhance your knowledge even further, making this our most exciting year yet!

KS4 Theatre Trips

See your KS4 texts come to life by attending the number of theatre trips run by the English department throughout the year.  There will be opportunities in Years 10 and 11 to see Blood Brothers and Macbeth (local performances permitting) on stage performed by professional actors which will open up a new way of seeing and appreciating these amazing plays.  All of your English teachers agree that one of the best ways to revise your understanding of the plays is to go and see them live (often at a discounted school rate) So, do not miss out on this brilliant opportunity!  See your English teacher about any upcoming trips today.

Library Clubs, Quizzes And Competitions

Seasonal activities and quizzes are held throughout the year! Visit our library and speak to Mrs Bowen-Read about this years quizzes, Research Club and Craft Club.  We also run our annual Extreme Reading competition every summer. Take a photograph of yourself reading a book in an extreme place or somewhere extremely far away and email your entry to Mrs Bowen-Read!
