St Edmund Arrowsmith regularly participates in the Young Enterprise Award Scheme where students are given a chance to taste life in the business world.  If you are in Year 11 and interested in taking part, read the information below and ask your Senior Learning Co-ordinator for more details.

The Young Enterprise Company Programme allows Year 10 pupils  to set up and run a real firm for a year under the guidance of a business volunteer from 'Speedy Hire Group'. Pupils get practical experience of the joys and pitfalls of creating a truly functioning enterprise. Pupils carry out  everything from raising the initial share capital through to designing and making their product or service, to selling directly to customers at specially organised trade fairs and ultimately winding up the firm and paying their taxes! This renowned programme has been running since 1963 and in that time a million 15-19 year olds have taken part. Apart from delivering aspects of work related learning under the National Curriculum, independent research shows it helps develop key skills that enhance young people’s employability and enterprise capabilities.

Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Scheme

The D of E programme is a real adventure from beginning to end.  It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from.  You just need to be aged between 14 and 24 and realise there’s more to life than sitting on a sofa watching life pass you by.

Levels -You can do programmes at three levels, which when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Sections -You achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections - Volunteering, Physical, Skills and the Expedition. You'll find yourself helping people or the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition. The best bit is - you get to choose what you do!

The D of E gives you the chance to do something completely new and improve on things you’re already doing. It takes you out of your comfort zone and into a place where you’ll push yourself and have amazing new experiences. You’ll build confidence, resilience, skills for work and friendship groups. And you’ll have a brilliant time doing it.

Looking forward, the D of E can help you to carve out a better future. Colleges, universities and employers regard a D of E Award highly so it will help to open the right doors for you. If you’re keen to get off the sofa and put 100% into something that could change your life, the D of E is for you.

If you need any further information, talk to your D of E Leader (Mr D Morgan – Head of PE) or, if you're not sure where you can do your D of E, get in touch with your nearest Licensed Organisation and they'll be able to help you! If you're decided to do your D of E, then find out more info on getting started, choosing your activities and how to complete your D of E and achieve your Award.
