Jasmine R, Year 9 has achieved an outstanding Distinction in her Grade 8 drum exam. This is a fantastic achievement, as she is one of the youngest people to get achieve this in the country. We are delighted with Jasmine's success and caught up with her to find out more about her passion for playing the drums.
I'm Jasmine and I'm 13 years old. I have had drum lessons since I was 8 and recently took the highest music grade which is a Grade 8. I had to play 3 different pieces in front of an examiner which made me very nervous, but it went really well. I got 93% on my exam which is a Distinction. Apparently, I'm one of the youngest people to get this in the country which I am really proud of.
I practice at home for around 1 hour every day and have lessons every Saturday at The Music Rooms, in Newton-le-Willows. I also play at school and have taken part in the Music Showcase, Music Festival and played in the school band in assemblies and for our school productions each year. All of this preparation has paid off and I'm really happy with my result, I can’t quite believe it!
I'm from a musical family, my dad plays bass in a band, so I have always grown up around music at home. This has inspired me to play an instrument and I hope that I inspire others to aim high and try too, especially girls. I want to encourage this because people tend to expect boys to play drums, but I want girls to take up playing this amazing instrument!
