Congratulations to Y11 student, Jack Barbour who took part in the regional heat of 'The Great Debate 2025', at Manchester Grammar School.
The Great Debate is a nationwide public speaking competition organized by the Historical Association. Pupils are given a topic to research, and prepare a five minute speech. Regional heats are held across the country and the judges select one pupil to progress to the semi finals, which are held online. The finals are held in Windsor, with pupils speaking in front of a group of senior academics who select the winner.
There were 9 pupils from various schools in the Greater Manchester area taking part in the regional heat last night. They had to give a five minute speech answering the question "How can your local history tell a global story?" Although a pupil from a nearby grammar school was selected for the semi-final, Jack performed admirably, demonstrating excellent subject knowledge and enthusiasm for his topic. His speech was very well received by the judges and audience.
WELL DONE Jack! We are very proud of all that you do in school in your role as Deputy Head Boy!
